DOTA 2 Matchmaking: Valve’s New Update Leaves Holes, Here’s How We Can Fix Them
By merging Solo and Party, Valve has essentially removed the incentive to play alone to prove your true skill. Did you know? Sometimes we feel like topping up your account so you can go into action straight away, so keep an eye on our website for promotions.
Party and Solo MMR Combined. Dota 2 is meant to be played as a team game, and Valve clearly felt as though this wasn’t accurately represented.
With the new ranked season ongoing, this is great news for those who have noted several aspects of the current matchmaking system that have caused issues. Valve also stated that whatever changes are in the works will be ready later this week. We are working on a few fixes to improve matchmaking quality and expect to have it out later this coming week. The main issues of the current matchmaking system included half stacked players constantly being forced to play against five stacked teams, which would lead to one-sided matches.
Along with the players getting banned for poor behavior scores and some issues with high MMR players having extremely long queue times, there is a rampant issue with players being able to report anyone with no consequence. Even if you play well in a match and end up losing by a small margin, players on your team who think you played poorly can freely report you without a reason. This has essentially turned Dota into a win to commend system where losses result in teams mass reporting each other if they are playing with randoms.
This likely means a new addition to the system is coming that will weigh the reports differently based on the situation. It might even end up harming the behavior scores of those players who mass report others for reasons that the system deems unnecessary. That would make players think twice about reporting someone after a loss just because they are a little salty. This is by far the most communication Valve and the Dota 2 devs have had with the community in a long time, which is a great sign for the health of the game, especially at a competitive level.
The developers are frequently talking with players on Reddit and keeping everyone informed about what they are working on and fixing next.

This update brings a massive overhaul of the competitive matchmaking algorithm, just in time for the next ranked season. The first big change addresses the mismatched ranks of people playing against each other in the same role. The update hopes to remedy this problem by prioritizing rank symmetry across both teams. In the past, the matchmaking algorithm would prioritize rank spread across the opposing teams. Should this update work as intended, it would make for some more evenly matched games.
The next change adds a report function in the earliest stages of the game. In an attempt to make sure everyone plays the role they queued for, players will now be able to report others in the drafting phase and the first few minutes of a game. The Dota 2 team states that with this reporting system, and some other detection features, they will be able to be more aggressive towards players who abuse the matchmaking system.
The team states that this ratio will change over time as they find the optimal balance. The Dota team next addresses the ban wave that came with this update. These include accounts with a low behavior score, accounts that have been bought for the purpose of playing at a high or low rank, and accounts that have been caught using exploits.

DOTA is an amazing game and has an amazing community! I cannot imagine my life without it. A welcome quality of life chance, but then players started reporting a weird bug – they automatically gained or lost thousands of MMR points. From what we can tell, players who finished the match when Dota 2 coordinator was offline or right after the patch was released, are the ones who are primarily affected by this issue. If their last game ended with a victory, they gained thousands of MMR.
If they lost, they lost the same amount. Many have theorized that this is due to the server trying to process matchmaking data, over and over again but ultimately failing.
Matchmaking is the process through which the system groups players into opposing teams for public games modes. Dota 2 is played in matches between two teams of five players, with each team occupying and defending their own separate base on the map. Each of the ten players independently controls a powerful character, known as a “hero”, who all have unique abilities and differing styles of play. During a match, players collect experience points and items for their heroes to successfully defeat the opposing team’s heroes in player versus player combat.
A team wins by being the first to destroy the other team’s “Ancient”, a large structure located within their base. Development of Dota 2 began in when IceFrog , lead designer of Defense of the Ancients , was hired by Valve to create a modernized remake for them in the Source game engine. It was officially released for Microsoft Windows , OS X , and Linux -based personal computers via the digital distribution platform Steam in July , following a Windows-only open beta phase that began two years prior.
The game is fully free-to-play with no heroes or any other gameplay element needing to be bought or otherwise unlocked. To maintain it, Valve supports the game as a service , selling loot boxes and a battle pass subscription system called Dota Plus that offer non-gameplay altering virtual goods in return, such as hero cosmetics and audio replacement packs. The game has also been updated with various other features since release, such as a port to the Source 2 engine and support for virtual reality.
Dota 2 has a large esports scene, with teams from around the world playing in various professional leagues and tournaments. Valve manages an event format known as the Dota Pro Circuit , which are a series of tournaments that award qualification points for earning direct invitations to The International , the game’s premier annual tournament. Media coverage of most tournaments is done by a selection of on-site staff who provide commentary and analysis for the ongoing matches, similar to traditional sporting events.
In addition to playing live to audiences in arenas and stadiums, broadcasts of them are also streamed over the internet, and sometimes simulcast on television networks, with peak viewership numbers in the millions.

MMR starts at a value of 1 point, and theoretically has no ceiling at all—which means that MMR can grow infinitely. A player can obtain his or her MMR by participating in ranked matchmaking, which is divided into six-month seasons. Fresh accounts and those that have gone through seasonal MMR resets must participate in calibration matches, in order to have themselves placed at a certain MMR value.
Once a player completes their calibration matches, they receive a ranking medal, which is roughly based on their MMR. Image via Valve. This obviously can lead to confusion about how MMR works as a whole. That said, there is information about the intricate details made available by data miners and such, which we will cover in this general guide to the system. Naturally, the matchmaking system tries its best to group ten players of similar MMRs together, in order to get the fairest and most balanced matchup possible.
To do this, the system considers five separate MMR values, with some of these values being hidden from the player and his or her public profile.
